BACK AT THE EDGE OF THE SEA

We are very pleased to announce that 'At The Edge Of The Sea', the one-day indoor festival curated by David Gedge [pictured], will return next year on Saturday 28 August. The event will once again take place between 3PM and 10PM at the historic 'Concorde 2' venue which is situated on the seafront at Brighton, on the sunny south coast of England.

The 2010 festival is obviously still very much in the planning stages but we can already confirm that The Wedding Present will be playing their second album, 'Bizarro', live at this event.

The cost of admission, unfortunately, has to be slightly higher than it was in 2009, but a limited number of 'early-bird' tickets have been made available at the old  price of just £15. Just click here.

Last year's event was a huge success and there were some great performances from the likes of The Wedding Present, Cinerama, The Pipettes, Terry de Castro, Calvin Party, The Victorian English Gentlemens Club, Villareal, Human, Astrid Williamson and Eamon Hamilton. You can see pictures from the day here and purchase 'At The Edge Of The Sea' merchandise from our merchandise pages.

AT THE EDGE OF THE SEA

We are happy to announce that David Gedge's mini festival on England's south coast in August was a resounding success, even though both Frank Sidebottom and Lucky Soul had to pull out at the last minute due to illness. All the other artistes were very well received and, as well as some fantastic music, festival go-ers were rewarded with a beautiful day by way of a hot sun beating down onto Brighton's famous seafront. It was genuinely touching to discover that so many people had travelled to the event and it was wonderful to see some old friends.

There are some pictures of the event on the 'drowned in sound' web site which you can visit by clicking here.

IN BRIGHTON WITH DAVID

David Gedge will be a guest on Radio Reverb's 'In Brighton With Jeff' show at 5PM [BST] on Thursday 20 August 2009, where he will be performing a couple of acoustic songs. Radio Reverb transmits in the Brighton area on 97.2 FM and on the net at http://radioreverb.com/

AT THE EDGE OF THE SEA UPDATE

Scopitones are pleased to announce some of the support bands scheduled to appear at "At The Edge Of The Sea".

The event, which is named in honour of the Wedding Present song of the same name, will run from 3PM until 10PM on Saturday 22 August 2009. David Gedge has curated the whole shebang which takes place at Concorde 2, right on the Brighton seafront.

The following artists will be also appearing at the festival:

The Pipettes [pictured]
Lucky Soul
Frank Sidebottom
Human [acoustic set]
Astrid Williamson [acoustic set]

The festival will kick off at 3PM with an acoustic set from Cinerama and DJ sets will be provided by Wedding Present members old and new... Shaun Charman, Graeme Ramsay and David Gedge himself.

With a recession beating ticket price pegged at just £15 this must be the bargain festival of the year, especially as we hope to add even more artistes to this list!

Tickets may be purchased by clicking here.

RAMSAY COMES OUT FROM BEHIND THE DRUMS

Guitarist Simon Cleave is unable to take part in The Wedding Present's current British mini-tour because he is recovering from illness. Fortunately, the band's multi-instrumentalist drummer, Graeme Ramsay has taken up the challenge and is now playing guitar! The vacated drum stool is being occupied by Charles Layton, who previous played drums for the band during 2005 and 2006 at concerts in North America and Continental Europe.

This is not the first time that a member of The Wedding Present has changed instruments. Older fans will recall the time in 1995 when bassist Darren Belk switched to guitar following the departure of Paul Dorrington.

A CASA VERDE : TERRY DE CASTRO'S SOLO ALBUM OUT ON 15 JUNE

Wedding Present bass player Terry de Castro's debut solo album is released by Scopitones on 15 June 2009. On it, she takes a novel approach... one that is especially charming, likable, and... well, curious. She's chosen to take a wonderfully unusual course and recorded an album comprised entirely of cover versions, but these are not necessarily well-known songs by famous artists. Each songwriter on A Casa Verde is a personal friend and musical collaborator of Terry de Castro. The record comes with elaborate sleeve notes delineating the stories, alliances and histories of all the artists and her connections to them, placing each song into it's unique context, thus strengthening the overall coherence and concept of the album.

It's a deliberately understated exercise. There is a warm, inviting humility in the basic premise of devoting a record to the telling of stories by your friends, and it informs the entire endeavour, setting a tone of intimacy and empathy. Each song is a story unto itself, and all of the songs hang together in a vivid and illuminating way.

Nationality comes into play here as well: A Casa Verde is replete with the intrinsically soothing and unmistakably American strains of steel guitar and banjo, among other instruments. De Castro's maturity as an artist is apparent from the first track, as she adapts "Dalliance" by The Wedding Present, readily making it her own by layering pedal-steel and acoustic guitars. It's a wry, subtly arch choice to launch this particular solo debut.

In one of the album's highlights, de Castro strikes a darker tone with "East St. O'Neill" by Hank Starrs. With a deceptively languid start and sparkling imagery, it builds slowly, on a theme of murder and sorrow, rising on the strength of rousing chord changes that are disturbingly catchy, given the subject matter.

As the record progresses, a rich array of styles and subjects take their spin across the dance floor. "The Sun Is Always Sweetest" by Dean Hawksley is a bittersweet Country-tinged waltz. Two tracks by Astrid Williamson (Goya Dress of which Terry was also a member); "Glorious" and "To Love You," are swirling torch songs. The authors also include Mike Chylinski (Drugstore), Simone White (Audi's 'Beep Beep' song), Johnny Daukes (Eurotrash), and Paul Hiraga (Downpilot). de Castro does an expert job of filtering their material through her own self-assured aesthetic, while directing an outstanding band in the process.

A Casa Verde is an unpretentious, lovingly assembled pop record; a simple collection of songs. But as a project, the record hangs together in a positively conceptual way, one that vivifies Terry de Castro's life, and the lives of her friends.

Early reviews:

"A low key delight (8/10)" [NME]

"I like de Castro's voice a lot" [Pennyblack Music]

"A glorious alt-pop gem... this is one of the most intimate and affecting records in years" [Rock 'n' Reel]

"A winningly intriguing collection... in a word: magical" [Rock-A-Rolla]

Fans here in the UK shouldn't feel too badly done by, however, since the support on four of the band's forthcoming British dates will be provided by Blast, an exciting indie-rock band from Moscow who sing in English and who have been receiving rave reviews in the British press. And if that wasn't enough, support in June will be provided by none other than The Wedding Present's bass player, our own Terry de Castro!

David will be working with arranger Tommy Laurence to adapt a selection of Wedding Present and Cinerama songs which he will then be performing with the BBC Big Band, conducted by Steve Sidwell. Tickets for the event are £17.50.

The full FUSELEEDS 09 programme, featuring over 30 events, will be announced on 27 February at a launch event at The Leeds College of Music but you can also visit the festival web site by clicking here.
